YOUTH DanCE CLASSES

In the cultural heritage of folk musical traditions of Upper Silesia, dance has a rich repertoire. In the past, it functioned commonly within the regional bodies and belonged to functional and ceremonial forms. Nowadays, Polish folk dance is a separate trend, an element of folklore for which the practical and stage demand is growing. The “Śląsk” ensemble, by being actively involved in the dissemination process of Polish cultural heritage, formulates a professional offer and tasks in the field of artistic education.
The workshops of Polish folk and national dances are an open educational and artistic form in the full scope of practical and methodical teaching. The objective of the workshops is to teach the elements and forms of Polish regional and national dances at different levels of advancement. In an accessible form, participants in the workshops learn the elements of dance and the method of performing Polish national dances – Krakowiak and Polonez as well as the regional dance, i.e. Trojak. The workshops are conducted by educators from the “Śląsk” ensemble who have substantive knowledge, experience and ability to apply group techniques and work.
The dance workshops provide an educational platform in the field of Polish folk and national dances and an alternative way to become familiar with the authentic dance repertoire and the achievements of generations of Poles. They are a response to the need to learn, preserve and pass down to future generations the authentic forms and performance styles of Polish folk and national dances.

Workshops run by the Silesian Science Festival

The Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE (ŚFN) is an event promoting science and art, which instantly gained the status of the largest festival organised indoor and in one place in Poland and one of the largest events of this nature in Europe. And it only took a few years to grow so fast and to achieve the highest European level – the first of the five editions held so far took place in 2016!

The main objective of ŚFN is to convince the residents of the Silesian Voivodeship that science is for everyone and that it is never too late to get interested in it; that expanding one’s knowledge can be a passionate pastime and a way to spend free time; that science is not only the subject of scientific disputes in lecture halls and laboratories, but it influences many aspects of our daily lives and we come into contact with it much more often than we realise.

The program of each edition of the festival consists of hundreds of different activities: lectures, workshops, shows, stands grouped into six areas of knowledge (natural sciences, technology, humanities and social sciences, exact sciences, medicine and health, art), exhibitions, concerts, and meetings with special guests (also in a cosier form, when the festival audience can ask questions to interesting figures from the world of science and beyond). As part of ŚFN, we also promote the achievements of amateur inventors, who can present their innovative technical solutions in the OFF Science zone (and the audience can select the best ones in the Review of Garage Inventions). In the POP Science competition, we reward individuals and initiatives that promote science in a variety of ways.

The best indicator of the validity of the direction we chose is the trust placed in us by the festival audience – the five editions held so far have brought over 175,000 people to the International Congress Centre in Katowice (the first four editions) and to the Rawa Scienceville (the fifth edition), and several thousand more followed the festival events online!

The success of the festival has led to a proposal to become the ambassador of the Silesian Voivodeship during the Regional Week in the Polish Pavilion – the exhibition presenting our country at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai. However, the ŚFN’s role will not be limited to this honourable function: the representatives of the festival, scientists from the University of Silesia in Katowice, will offer a series of workshops for the visitors of the Polish Pavilion on building a space rocket, renewable sources of electric energy, and the processes of urbanisation and metropolisation of the region.

Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE is organised by: University of Silesia in Katowice (leader and originator of the event), City of Katowice (host city), Metropolis GZM and Marshall Office of the Silesian Voivodeship (co-hosts), as well as Silesian University of Technology, Medical University of Silesia, Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa, Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Częstochowa University of Technology, University of Economics in Katowice and University of Bielsko-Biała.
